Student Craft Design Award 2008

Genevieve Packer, Aerial Antics 2008. Overall winner of TheNewDowse Friends' Student Craft Design Award

For over 20 years TheNewDowse Friends have offered support and encouragement to tertiary students through the Student Craft/Design Award, which encourages innovation and creativity specifically in the areas of design and craft.

There are two awards – an Overall Winner ($3000) and a Merit Award ($500). The annual award is open to all students currently enrolled in a tertiary level arts, craft or design programme, as well as students who have graduated in the previous year. Wellington design students took a clean sweep at the 2008 Awards, with Genevieve Packer's Aerial Antics the Overall Winner and Palarat Ronakiat (Trong)'s Kostellow the Merit Award winner.

Genevieve Packer

The key to good design is simplicity, and Genevieve has demonstrated this beautifully with her Aerial Antics wallpaper and lamp shade. She boldly reworked the iconic New Zealand image of the fantail, and the result is sexy and delicate, with light bringing the tactile surfaces to life. Genevieve recently completed a Master of Design at Massey University, Wellington. Her winning work can also be seen here.

Palarat Ronakiat (Trong)

Trong's Kostellow work was a response to a university project that required students to create an everyday piece of furniture inspired by a ritual. The catch - the only material that could be used was found timber pallets. Trong designed a bookshelf for the true book lover, where every treasured book has its own special place. Trong is in the final year of a four year design degree at Victoria University of Wellington.
