CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR TOURING:

Who Am I?

Available from mid May 2012

A unique and playful exhibition focussing on identity through the art of portraiture. With such close ties to the school curriculum, it's a great show for those venues wanting to bring in school groups and boost LEOTC numbers. It was hugely successful here at The Dowse, not only with children but their families, teachers, and art lovers in general. Visotors enjoyed the interactive elements of the show as well as the paintings, drawings, photography and sculpture by renowned artists Frances Hodgkins, Toss Wollaston, Rita Angus, Michael Smither, Jeffrey Harris, Robin White, Nigel Brown, Paul Rayner, Melvin Day, Jim Cooper, Ans Westra and more. Those venues who hosted our show Tickle My Senses will love this exhibition. The Dowse Art Museum is proud to offer this to facilities around New Zealand. [Exhibition Page] / [Touring Pack]

Barry Brickell: A Major Survey Exhibition

Available from late 2012

Barry Brickell is one of New Zealand’s most important ceramicists, and a major figure in the development of a distinctive, indigenous art. This exhibition is the first significant survey exhibition of Barry’s work, and brings together over 60 works, drawing on the sizable holdings of both the Dowse Art Museum and Brickell’s own collection, together with key works from around New Zealand. The exhibition includes a number of major Spiromorphs, alongside large-scale ceramic murals shown in public for the first time, and a myriad of other Brickell forms and characters, from Fatsos to Thinsos. In addition, the exhibition showcases Brickell’s early development as a potter, from his very first pots to significant works made in collaboration with art critic Hamish Keith, during their time as flatmates in the 1950s.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a major publication on Barry Brickell’s work. This exhibition has been curated by Dowse Art Museum Senior Curator Emma Bugden and Sociologist and writer David Craig, in close partnership with Barry Brickell.

Bedazzled

Available from mid 2012

A major exhibition of stunning costumes and intricate drawings by the late Kristian Fredrikson for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, spanning ballets from Cinderella, Swan Lake, A Christmas Carol, Tell Me A Tale, A Servant of Two Masters, The Winter Garden and Jean. The RNZB has a long-standing relationship with The Dowse, to whom they gifted a number of costumes in the mid 2000s. This significant gift of 73 costumes is the largest collection of Kristian’s costumes outside of the RNZB. In 2007, after Kristian’s death in 2004, his brother and the RNZB gifted approximately 200 of Kristian’s hand-drawn and painted costume designs to The Dowse, many of which are the designs from which these costumes were created. This is your chance to see both drawings and costumes in a major survey of this world-reknowned designer's work.
