The Celia Dunlop Collection

Gordon Walters: Untitled - Ann Verdcourt: Something old, something new - Brendon Bodley: Hope

2 May - 13 September 2009 | MEDIA RELEASE | BIOS | BOOK

Celia Dunlop was a collector driven by her intense passion for art, surrounding herself with works which resonated with her sense of identity as a New Zealander. This exhibition is an opportunity to share in her joy and her collection. Public programmes include a personal tour, art market Q&A and behind-the-scenes look at TheNewDowse collection, as well as July school holidays creative workshops for kids.

During her lifetime Celia collected over 250 art works by 121 artists, with most of the works happily living floor to ceiling, wall to wall, in her Wellington villa. Artists featured include Gordon Walters, Peter Robinson, Robyn Kahukiwa, Lynn Kelly and many more painters, jewellers and ceramists. A book of the entire collection has been produced in association with the exhibition, with all proceeds of the $99 retail price going to the Mary Potter Hospice. Email the Celia Dunlop Trust if you would like to order a copy, or buy one from TheNewDowse reception desk during our opening hours.

Art played a vital role in Celia’s life, providing her with intellectual stimulation as well as emotional and spiritual sustenance. After 40 years of collecting she declared that although not good for the budget, art was “wonderful for the soul”. We hope that you will have your own unique experience of this through the exhibition.
