Blumhardt Curatorial Internship

The Blumhardt Foundation, Creative New Zealand and The Dowse have collaborated to create the role of Blumhardt Foundation/Creative New Zealand Curatorial Intern.

We are currently seeking applicants for the 2012 internship, please read the advertisement on The Big Idea.

The internship provides an important opportunity for an emerging curator or artist to develop curatorial skills and experience on an exhibition project focusing on the decorative arts and design. The intern will research and develop an exhibition for the Blumhardt Gallery’s exhibition programme at The Dowse.

Lily Hacking is the 2010 intern. She is currently working on an exhibition based around collaborative projects that will be exhibited at The Dowse from March 2012.

27 year old Lily is an arts historian and writer who grew up in Horokiwi and recently graduated from Victoria University with a BA in Art History (Hons). She is also about to embark on her masters programme.

“We are absolutely delighted to announce Lily’s success as the 2011 Blumhardt intern”, said Kaye McKinley, Chair of the Blumhardt Foundation, “As previous winners have demonstrated, the internship is a valuable opportunity for career development in the competitive and highly specialised curatorial field.”

Reuben Friend was awarded the Creative New Zealand-Blumhardt Foundation Curatorial Internship for 2008-09. He curated the exhibition: Plastic Māori.

"This internship was an amazing opportunity for me to develop my curatorial skills under the guidance of experienced mentors," says Reuben. "Opportunities like this internship are essential to nurture and challenge the next generation of New Zealand curators. This internship complemented and enhanced my study and work in Māori decorative art and design - which I believe has huge potential in terms of the way it is displayed and interpreted in museums and art galleries."
